This week you will complete Leçon 2 of the ‘Moi, Ma Famille, Mes Amis’ unit.
The goal is to develop your ability to talk about & describe people
There is a lot of new vocabulary included in this week’s lesson. Focus on learning the necessary new words needed to talk about those closest to you, then spend any extra time building the vocabulary to describe others. Consider the best way for you to memorize new words: Quizlet, paper cue cards, a sheet of paper divided in half with French words on one side and English/or image on the other, oral drills with a family member or friend from class. Practise reading, saying aloud & writing the new words.
Download this handout, follow the instructions and submit it to Teams by Thursday, June 4th Leçon 2 Handout
Read the following article about juggling school, work and sleep Entre l’école, le travail et le sommeil & make note of new vocabulary needed to interpret & discuss
Read these two short texts on recognizing emotions & managing stress la santé mentale
On the Questions Pour Madame channel, by Wednesday evening, share what you think is your most important ‘take away’ from the readings (en français, bien sûr!).
Think of this as a class discussion on a very important topic. I expect to see a post from each person – as well as a reaction or reply to a classmate.
Answers for the Deforestation part of the unit have been attached in your assignments on Teams. Please check your answers.
Check your chosen conversation slot for this Wednesday & show up on time 🙂
Prepare for the conversation by thinking about 5-7 questions or ideas that you would like to discuss related to the environment readings and videos. You may include some information that you have learned in other classes – as long as you have the vocabulary and language to do so.
Be careful not to prepare a script. As always, reading off a piece of paper will result in a ‘minimally meeting’ score.
Remember that the goal is to engage in conversation with your partners – so think about questions or specific topics that will generate the most interest & reaction
Focus on using vocabulary & structures that you have been exposed to throughout the unit (and in previous learning) rather than looking up other words
As always, do what you can to support your partners by putting on your video camera, using facial gestures, expressions, and ‘talk arounds’ for unknown words & asking clarifying or follow up questions
Your self-assessment rubric with criteria is attached on Teams. It includes suggestions for language structures that you should try to include.
As always, I will be available every day this week to answer your questions. I would like to have a class meeting on Thursday to review the language concepts & structures. Please give me a ‘thumbs up’ on Teams to let me know if you can attend.
REQUIRED FRENCH WORK THIS WEEK
This week we are starting a new unit called ‘Me, my family, my friends’. Please open and download the following unit package Moi, ma famille, mes amis
Review of basic structures, teaching of new language concepts, and new vocabulary are all included in this unit. It will be important that you allot time each day to work through it & to practise with a partner to develop confidence.
Please complete all of Leçon 1 this week.
Read through the lessons on grammar structures & complete the practise work. Then, complete & submit this handout on Teams by Friday, May 29th Leçon 1 – moi, ma famille, mes amis
OPTIONAL
Start looking ahead in the unit and memorizing the new vocabulary for lessons 2 & 3.
Expand your vocabulary and comprehension by listening to a different story each day. There are 30 stories in Saison 1!
With parent permission, sign up for a Duolingo account and spend 5 minutes a day learning new vocabulary and challenging your skills. It would be a good idea to focus on the same unit theme (family).
Here’s Keen’V dreaming and singing about a trip to Tahiti & the end of Covid isolation 🙂
On the Questions Pour Madame channel, tell us what you dream of doing when life returns to normal (en français bien sûr)! PLEASE DO THIS BY TUESDAY & check back to react or reply to your classmates. I’d love to see some full sentence replies & gifs are welcome too. We need to find joy and laughter where we can 🙂
AFTER working through new vocab & completing your interpretive work, submit this handout to Teams by Friday, May 29th La vie saine – tâches interprétatives
OPTIONAL
Begin or continue to read one of the novels accessible on Teams until the end of this week.
Watch a short film in French on the National Film Board of Canada site, or a short video clip on YouTube or other media. Call a friend and tell them all about it in French.
Write or record a journal entry for this week.
Let me know if you’re doing optional, extra work. Submit this on Teams by Friday, May 29th at 4:30. Optional Level Ups will only be looked at if submitted by the due date and time. PLEASE DO NOT TURN IN A BLANK DOCUMENT! Level-Up-Optional-Practice
Complete Leçon 3: La Déforestation by Thursday, May 28th and submit your handout on Teams by 4:30
Check your answers on the answer key package attached to your assignment on Teams
I will attach these after the due date
Prepare and sign up for small group conversations on the Questions Pour Madame channel by Wednesday, May 27th.
Please note: There will be no new assignment next week except for the conversation on Wednesday
OPTIONAL THIS WEEK (but important for next week!)
Start prepping for the conversations scheduled for Wednesday, June 3rd
Review the interpersonal sections of your unit package. These were designed to prepare you for conversations: asking questions on the topic, giving advice & sharing opinions
Prepare some interesting questions in advance to generate conversation (Think about the debates you had earlier in the year & remember to address a variety of aspects of the topic)
Remember that you will also be expected to ‘follow up’ with relevant questions that you did not prepare in advance
Review the essential vocab so that you can include details & explain in depth
Review the phrases & structures needed for sharing opinions & giving advice
This week is your end of unit writing assessment. The objective of this task is to show that you can use the simple structures and vocabulary learned so far to tell a story.
Do NOT use any resources other than your unit 1 package and your work from the Napoléon stories. Do NOT write your story in English & translate.
Think about how you can communicate your story idea with the structures, words and phrases you have learned so far.
Please type your story as a Word Doc and submit on Teams by Thursday at 4:30.
OPTIONAL
Expand your vocabulary and comprehension by listening to a different story each day. There are 30 stories in Saison 1!
With parent permission, sign up for a Duolingo account and spend 5 minutes a day learning new vocabulary and challenging your skills
Choose a different section from your Unit 1 package to review each day. A lot of novice work is memorization of basic vocabulary and expressions! Make cue cards, use Quizlet, call a friend from class to speak in French, practise using vocabulary and structures in your own sentences & questions … or teach someone at home what you know!
Let me know if you are doing optional, extra work to extend your learning of French. Submit this on Teams by Monday, May 25th Level-Up-Optional-Practice
If you don’t participate in the optional activities, please don’t turn in the handout.
We are beginning a mini unit on healthy living. This week, you will develop some new vocabulary to be able to communicate in French on this topic. Read these student-created infographics which share their opinions on various aspects of maintaining a healthy lifestyle:
Make note of structures used to convey information.
Complete the Interpretive Questions Handout on Teams by Friday, May 22 at 4:30.
OPTIONAL
Begin or continue to read one of the novels accessible on Teams until the end of May. Reading is a great way to expand your vocabulary, improve sentence structure and immerse yourself in the language while confined at home!
The lesson begins with a quick read & a group discussion. You can choose to do this alone or remotely with a partner
Part III includes a rapid interview activity. Rather than 10 classmates (since we are not yet together in the classroom), choose three people that you can ask & answer questions with over the phone, Skype, FaceTime etc.
You have likely noticed that the articles are outdated! Though facts & figures have changed since these were written, they are still a good interpretive read for vocabulary development.
Submit your handout to Teams by Thursday, May 28th la déforestation
Spend some time reviewing the vocabulary and structures you have been practising throughout this unit. You will be participating in small group conversations on this topic early in the first week of June.
Review your Leçon 2 answers by checking the attachment to your assignment in Teams
To be ready for your oral assessment this Thursday, you must do the following things
Sign up for one of the time slots on the Questions Pour Madame Channel by tomorrow (Tuesday, May 12th)
Watch the recording of the class meeting on the General channel in Teams in which I explain what we will do and what the expectations are. The objective of the conversation is to show that you can
retell parts of the stories
ask & answer questions about the stories
react to & make connections to the story (See the back of your Unit 1 package for vocabulary & expressions for this)
Review the vocabulary from the stories, re-listen to or re-read the stories, & review how to form questions (Remember there are two ways to ask ‘yes/no’ questions.)
There are lots of question words & question practice/notes in your unit 1 package
Other ideas to study/prepare:
Make a list of all the characters that Napoléon meets throughout the stories.
Write a question about each character & phone a friend to practise asking your questions & listening to responses.
Make a list of describing words used in the stories and notice where they are placed in the sentence (Ex. la vieille dame … notice that old is placed before the person. BUT, le chien méchant …. notice that ‘mean’ is placed after ‘dog’.)
Most describing words in French come after the word they describe (opposite to English) but a few are placed before. We will learn more about this soon, but pay attention to the patterns in the stories.
Describe Napoléon and explain why/what he does (ex. Napoléon est triste parce qu’il est seul.)
Review the words that help us talk about sequence, frequency or time (Unit 1 package)
Make a list of the action words in the story that are necessary to retell the plot. Notice the pattern.
***On Thursday morning, I will post a self-assessment rubric in Assignments on Teams. You will have 30 minutes to complete and submit it AFTER your conversation.
OPTIONAL
Expand your vocabulary and comprehension by listening to a different story each day. There are 30 stories in Saison 1!
With parent permission, sign up for a Duolingo account and spend 5 minutes a day learning new vocabulary and challenging your skills

REQUIRED FRENCH WORK THIS WEEK
This is the last week of new stories about Napoléon!
Read one story each day & make a list of new vocabulary and language structures
I have given you less questions as practice work this week to allow you extra time to review all of the stories (+ vocabulary, expressions & language structures) in preparation for your end of unit assessment next week.
I will be hosting a class meeting to discuss assessments this Wednesday at 1pm. Please join if you can & come with your questions!
Submit Assignment #6 only when you have reviewed the feedback you received on previous Napoléon assignments, finished the 3 short stories & related work.
Make a list of new vocabulary and language structures from the story
Practise retelling the last three stories to a friend from class or a family member
***Complete these questions in full sentences (in French, of course!) & submit to Teams by Thursday, May 7th at 4:30 Le vieux Napoléon ques
OPTIONAL
Call a friend from class & practise retelling the whole story of Napoléon’s life. Ask & answer each other’s questions.
Expand your vocabulary and comprehension by listening to a different story each day. There are 30 stories in Saison 1!
With parent permission, sign up for a Duolingo account and spend 5 minutes a day learning new vocabulary and challenging your skills

If you don’t participate in the optional activities, please don’t turn in the handout.
Please submit a short audio or video journal entry this week. I’d love to see your faces (and it IS easier to understand!) but if you prefer audio only, that’s fine too.
Most phones have an audio/voice memo option that you can save & upload to Teams
You choose the topic!
Remember that our goal is always to communicate as naturally as possible (please do not read a text to me).
In French 11, we are communicating in more detail with a variety of personal vocabulary, using connecting words & more than one sentence to explain and describe.
PLEASE SUBMIT TO TEAMS BY FRIDAY, MAY 8TH.
2. Assignment 10 | End of Unit Preparation for Small Group Interpersonal Assessment
PLEASE READ THROUGH THIS POST VERY CAREFULLY TO SEE WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO BE READY FOR YOUR ORAL ASSESSMENT NEXT WEEK.
Crac! by Fredéric Back
Watch this wordless, short Québécois film
Make notes about the events (in English) & your interpretation of the theme of the film
Do some quick research on the film director/artist & take notes in English
Watch this short Québécois film based on a well-known French legend
(You read a condensed version of this with Mme Thiele earlier this semester)
Take notes in English about the story & what you think happens at the end
NOTE: This is a very old legend and there are many, many versions of it. Focus on what happens in this short film version.
You have now read and watched Le Chandail de Hockey and learned a little about the importance of a French identity for many Québécois.
You have learned a little about the Acadians, where they came from, what happened to them in the tragic history of French/British tensions & colonialism, and where many of their descendants live today.
And now you have watched these two short Québécois films. What questions do you have about them? As we scratch the surface of this topic, what new understandings or interpretations have you gained about French-Canadian culture and history?
On Tuesday, May 12th for Block 3 French 11 and Wednesday, May 13th for Block 4 French 11, you will participate in small group discussions about French-Canadian history & culture based on what you have read and viewed in recent weeks. The goals are:
to demonstrate some knowledge of French-Canadian history & culture
to ask & answer questions about French-Canadian history & culture
to retell some of the highlights or main events of the stories you have read/watched
to make some personal connections and comparisons or share reactions to the stories & films
You will be assessed just as you are in class:
for using strategies to help yourself & support your group partners
for being an equal, engaged participant in the conversation
for asking clarifying questions
for speaking clearly & using the vocabulary and language structures that are expected and appropriate at this point in your language learning
It will be different than what you are used to doing in the classroom because:
we won’t be in class 🙁
you will be in small groups rather than partners of two
I will be a little more involved because I will moderate as necessary (rather than just listen & take notes)
To be ready for next Tuesday or Wednesday, you
must sign up for a small group conversation time on the Questions Pour Madame Channel by replying to my request by Wednesday this week!
should make sure you have read and watched everything & have the needed vocabulary to discuss them
can generate some questions (review how to form questions if this is a challenge for you) and ideas to share on the topic (and have notes in English)
OPTIONAL
Here’s another challenge. Can you do it? Let us know on the Questions Pour Madame channel & use the @mention to challenge a friend from class! Bravo to Block 4 students who participated in this last week and tagged their classmates to try it too 🙂
I will post the novel, Alice, on Teams. It is actually the first story about Alice (for those who already read Khadra, 63 rue d’Aubagne).
Both novels will be accessible on Teams until the end of May for those who are looking to challenge themselves & extend their learning. Reading is a great way to expand your vocabulary, improve sentence structure and immerse yourself in the language while confined at home!
Let me know if you’re doing optional, extra work. Submit this on Teams by Friday at 4:30 Level Up Optional Practice
Please remember to check in with me personally if you haven’t been on Teams, missed handing in an assignment or just need some support! It’s important to maintain good communication while working remotely 🙂
REQUIRED FRENCH WORK THIS WEEK
We’re starting the second lesson in our Environment Unit this week.
Lesson 2 is all about pollution.
For Partie II Interprétation Écrite, you need a partner. One partner reads article A and the other reads article B.
Then, for Partie III Communication Interpersonnelle, you will conduct an interview with your partner. Use this for your interviews Lesson-2-interview
