Français 11 Team

In class today:

  • Read the beginning of this French text about castles & answer the following questions in English
    • 1. Why are castles from the Middle Ages now called ‘châteaux forts’?
    • 2. What did the word château come to mean in later times?
    • 3. What does ‘dès lors’ mean?
    • 4. In normal times, what was the castle used for?
    • 5. And in times of war?
    • 6. What did castles reveal about lords? http://brevehistoire.free.fr/Histoire/ActHist5_chateau1.htm
  • Then, read this text about castles. Notice that words in purple might be challenging and hints (or synonyms) are provided when you click on them. This is a good example of ‘talking around’ unfamiliar words.  When you have finished reading and have a good understanding of the text, click on ‘jouer’ at the bottom of the page to test your knowledge of the topic in French https://www.iletaitunehistoire.com/genres/documentaires/lire/bibliddoc_030#histoire
  • Next, read the adapted text about Jeanne d’Arc on page 44 and Mélusine on page 45.
    • Did you already know the story of Joan of Arc? Did you know that the Starbucks logo was related to a French myth? What other historical figure or myth has interested you? Can you imagine anyone from our current time that will someday be remembered by historians, students and every day citizens?

For extended learning and preparation at home:

  • Be ready to share images and important information about the French castle you researched. Remember that you should not be reading pre-written sentences. Your notes should be in English.
    • Yes, you can have the name written down in French & a couple of specific vocabulary reminders.
  • We will begin tomorrow with an interpretive reading assessment. Sentences & vocabulary used in the assessment come from our class lessons and readings in your unit package.

Bonjour les amis!

It’s virtual Wednesday and you have an assignment this afternoon. Please follow instructions & complete it this afternoon.

  • A-L students will hand it in in class tomorrow.
  • M-Z students, please come to the classroom tomorrow morning and put your work in the envelope attached to the door.

Your task is to show what you know & create a comic in French!

  1. Divide a sheet of paper into 6 boxes
  2. Include text and an image in each box. This can include speech bubbles for dialogue. There is no need to colour or fine-line the images … the artwork will not be evaluated 🙂
  3. Only use words or phrases that you have learned in French class this year!
  4. Your objective is to show how you can use a variety of the language & vocabulary we’ve been practising.
  5. Check your spelling and accents.

You must include the following:

  • A minimum of 2 greetings
  • A minimum of 4 questions
  • A variety of vocabulary (school words, weather phrases, numbers, seasons, useful classroom expressions etc) that make sense in the context of your comic
  • Two negative statements (using ‘non’ and/or ‘ne…pas’)

When you have finished your comic, log in to the Language Gym and work through any assignments that you have not yet completed.

HOURRA! C’EST LA FIN DE SEMAINE!

All students A-Z:

  • On page 42-43 of your unit package, practise saying the provinces and capitals of Canada in French
  • Notice that provinces have a gender! It is important to know if a province is masculine or feminine because we use different words when we talk about going to or leaving from places depending on their gender.
  • Follow along with the audio here & repeat after me
  • Then, turn to page 44 and, using the internet if necessary, label the map of Canada in French with the provinces, territories and capital cities. There are multiple cities indicated on the province of BC. You only need to include the capital & Vancouver.

SALUT LES AMIS 🙂

  • Until our issue with the assignments in our Language Gym class is fixed, you will need to modify the set up of the verb trainer on your own
    • When you ‘select all’, you end up with 700+ questions 🙂
    • In order to practise the imparfait, choose imperfect indicative
    • Then, select the verb category you would like to practise (ER, IR, irregulars, etc)
    • For best results, choose the category that is hardest for you!
    • Once you have improved in one area, you can move on to a new group of verbs
  • GOOD NEWS!  The assignments now seem to be showing up for Français 9 classes. I have modified the verb trainer assignment for Français 11 and am hopeful (fingers crossed!) that it will now show up for you.
  • We’re starting a new unit tomorrow & will continue to use the past tense to retell, explain and describe. Keep working on it!

Bon weekend les amis 🙂

FOR ALL STUDENTS (A-Z) THIS WEEKEND:

  • Please review all new vocabulary & concepts (alphabet, combined letter sounds, asking & telling the date and seasons, colours, useful classroom expressions)
  • If the links are functional on your computer, you can continue to use the interactive sites from your computer learning stations and add the calendar activities on page 4 of your handout. You can try googling “languages online French” and, if the site works for you, look for the concepts related to calendar
    • NOTE:  There’s an issue with dates in your handout vs dates in the infographic for the Calendrier activity 2 on page 4. For all of the questions between #10 & 17 asking for a specific year, please look for the NEXT date of the holiday in the 2020/21 school year.
  • If the links do not work on your device, consider
    • practising in front of the mirror to say the words aloud
    • writing them down
    • teaching them to someone else in your household
    • asking a friend from class to practise with you over the phone
    • making your own flashcards with pictures or English words on the back
    • making your own Quizlet
